Planet Board Game

Planet Board Game Review:

In the Planet board game, you will draft tiles to build a 3D planet. Your goal is to make your planet as habitable as possible by strategically creating habitats to allow the most life to develop. Whoever has the most animals on their planet wins.

How to Play

To set up the Planet Board game, give each player an empty planet core and a natural habitat card. Each core has 12 magnetic faces to place tiles on throughout the game. Shuffle all cards and tiles and lay them on the table according to the diagram. Determine the first player.Planet board game setup

At the beginning of a round, flip the 5 planet tiles set aside for that round. Starting with the first player, each player picks a tile and attaches it to their planet core. Once placed, this tile cannot be moved for the rest of the game.

When every player has placed their tile, if there are any animal cards available that turn, check which player best fulfills the requirements. There are three types of requirements an animal might have. When evaluating animal requirements, you will need to access areas and regions. An area is 1/5th of a tile representing one of the 5 environments. A region is a group of connected areas that all share the same environment.

Having the most of one type of region: The player with the most different regions of a specified type collects this creature.

Having the biggest region of one kind that touches a specified habitat: The player with the biggest region of a specified habitat that touches a secondary specific habitat. The biggest region is the region with the most areas.

Having the biggest region not in contact with a specified habitat: The player with the biggest region of a specified habitat that doesn’t touch the specified secondary habitat. The biggest region is the region with the most areas.

If there are any ties between players, the card is not collected by any player. The card remains to be collected on the next turn, along with any new cards. Move any remaining Tiles to be drawn on future turns. Repeat this until 12 turns have passed.

After 12 turns, everyone calculates their score. You gain 1 point for each animal card that matches your natural habitat and 2 points for any other animal. You gain up to 10 points according to your natural habitat card. You get more points the more areas you have throughout your planet that match your natural habitat. The player with the points wins.

Pros

the Planet board game is a very tactile game with high-quality components. Each player gets a 3D magnetic planet that they build in real-time. You can feel the quality of the pieces.

Cons

Due to the 3D nature of the game, not all the players’ information is readily available. Especially since the scoring of the game is based on comparing planets. This often leads to players examining each other’s planets, which may mess up the other player and slow the game down.

The Planet board game is light on complexity compared to the time it makes decisions. This leads to a slow-moving game that doesn’t have a lot of depth.

The magnets are well made. You can’t accidentally remove them during a game by peeling or dragging them off. The one problem is when a planet is dropped, even from just a couple of inches, the planet will shatter, scattering the tiles all over the table.

Accessibility

Color Blind: Planet may be difficult to play if you are colorblind. The habitat types blend in with each other making it difficult to distinguish the habitat types.

Reading: you only need to be able to read numbers to play Planet.

Children: There is no offensive content in Planet.
